Partial Remission!!
Greetings family and friends. I am back from Hawaii and well rested. Although my health was not at 100%, I think that was one of the best vacations I have ever been on, and thats not including my honeymoon. It wasn't because of the sights or activities or food. It was because of the rest and peace, the tranquility and spending time with those that are closest to my heart, my husband, my mom and Ray who is Cary's best friend and always managed to keep me in stitches. Laughter is good for the soul and a must when one is trying to heal.As far as my health is concerned over all I did quite well on the trip. I rarely had to resort to using my oxygen tanks which was surprising considering how active we stayed. I soaked up alot of sun and swam in the beautiful, blue, warm water. It felt oh so good. We spent many nights star gazing. Saw many falling stars and made many wishes. Of course I spent lots of time pondering upon life, my life. Most importantly I returned back from Hawaii with a new attitude. I feel different about things and this disease I have. I returned feeling more positive and less fearful. Now honestly I don't know how long this will last or I am not saying that since I have returned I have not had one scary thought enter my mind. But I am definately not the basket case I was before.
I want to give a big thanks to all those who donated money to our trip. We were very surprised and touched by your offerings. Thank you for your help in making our trip even more special. And a special thanks to Steve and Kriseda for sharing with us your little home on the Big Island. What a difference it made in our life.
Now that I have shared with you details about our trip I will now explain to you the title of my post. Partial remission is what my new Dr. said with a smile on his face. In all the four years that I have been battling this disease have I never had a Dr. smile about my current condition nor use the words "partial remission." I was so exstatic. I had a Dr's appointment today and when my oncologist entered the room he was all smiles when he said you seemed to be very stable. He then took measurments of my liver which has shrank another 2cm. Then listened to my lungs and could not here that funny crackling noise. He said, "oh your lungs are expanding much farther than they have been." "Something is working," he said. He then says, "You are in partial remission." I then ask if we should do a CT Scan and he says, "sure if you like, but just by looking at you, feeling your liver and listening to your lungs I know this is working." But as I wish he will order me a scan. So as I write this post I am still in shock.
A miracle has happened here. I went from needing assistance with oxygen to being in partial remission (visualizing a full remission.)
So thank you everyone for your prayers or positive thoughts and please keep them coming. I want to visualize myself living not dying. I want remission and I am going to concentrate, meditate, and pray on that until it comes.
Well, I have had enough typing for one night but in a later I would like to recommend, to any cancer patient who is interested, a diet that I have been on for about six months now (see references below.) I do believe it is playing a significant role in my recovery. If you're anything like me you might be thinking, ya, right whatever. But because I was basically out of options I tried it more out of desperation and well I find myself believing in it.
Till later
RESOURCES ON LORI'S DIET: Hi, this is Cary :) Since some of Lori's readers are desperatley fighting to survive this disease I thought it would be prudent to point you all towards some resources on the Budwig Diet, which we believe to be the main reason for Lori's current improvement–-you should note, however, that she is also receiving one of the last traditional treatments available to her, Avastin.
There are two inexpensive books in particular that explain the revolutionary work of German Biochemist Johanna Budwig. One describes her research and why the diet works as it does, and the other describes how to actually put the diet into practice. They are available at Amazon, but you can probably find them elsewhere as well.
Flax Oil As A True Aid Against Cancer
The Oil Protein Diet Cook Book
Cancer: The Problem And The Solution
There is also a recent study by Univeristy of Nevada Biochemist Ron Pardini, who managed to cure his elderly neighbor of terminal lung cancer via a diet very similar to Budwig's––and he'd never even heard of Budwig. I'm including a PDF file of the entire study, including CT-scans, and full dietary info. Very impressive stuff.
Nutritional Intervention With Omega-3 Fatty Acids in a Case of Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma of the Lungs
Here's another great research paper by Pardini examining the positive effects that omega-3 fatty acids can have on the effictiveness of various cancer treaments, including a number of different chemotherapeutic agents and radiotherapy.
Nutritional intervention with omega-3 fatty acids enhances tumor response to anti-neoplastic agents
All the best,
–Cary

Post a CommentYesterday was easily one of the best days of my life.
I love you sugarbear.

Praise God! I am so excited for you and Cary! Please share a post about the diet as I know 3 people that can use it. Hooray for you!!!
Oh my goodness sweetie, I am SO glad to read this. Peace to you both.
--Amanda
this is wonderful news, stay positive there are so many people thinking of you!
These news are oh, so much brigther than the sun outside!! I would be very interested in hearing about your diet, Lori, as I remember talking to you about one a few months ago. My friend also did such a diet, meditation, prayer and so on and she is now... well, hopefully, cancer free. Whatever is working, keep doing it! ;-)
ok. your post had me melting with relief and joy. then cm got me with "sugarbear". dang- it's all sweetness. and i must admit- i laughed when you called yourself a "basket case"... It's oh, so good to see you and know that you are feeling refreshed and empowered.
when you're up to it can you talk about your diet- or can c put it on Cancer NewsWatch? (I think that is such an important blog and check in over there from time to time).
Without going into a long explanation, for seven months Lori has been following a diet based on the works of German Biochemist Johanna Budwig (and more recently University of Nevada Biochemist Ron Pardini.)
It's science––not hocus pocus. The diet is pretty strict, and requires the elimination of most omega-6 fats, while increasing the intake of omega-3s.
This is the little book that started it all. While this book goes into a better explanation of how to actually put the diet into practice.
We recently contacted Pardini, and while he had no knowledge of Budwig's work––which predated his by 60 years––he is somewhat famous now for having cured his elderly neighbor of terminal lung cancer (abstract.)
Anyways, more info later, but I highly recommend the books above.
Lori is now a walking miracle ten times over :)
Lori Lori Lori!
I don't know you, but i read your blog regularly. I'm SO FREAKING HAPPY FOR YOU! and, i have to say I knew it. You are amazing. You go girl!

Wow! That is the greatest news I've heard in a long time, Lori. Your determination and will to live coupled with the love of your family and friends are far more potent than any medical treatment. Keep it flowing!
Peace and Love,
Steve
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amazing news. Plan another trip too! Good diet and a good trip is obviously worth more than their weight in gold. Bless you both!
Lori...I just ordered both books from Amazon. I can't thank you enough for sharing the information.
All the best Lori!
Share more photos if you can.
Lori
I am SO SO SO very happy for you guys!! :) :) :) You must be over the moon. Our family also had a miraculous triumph of our own. My papa is stable for about eight months now.
Cary, thanks for the heads up on the new diet. I'll have a look, it may be helpful for my dad too.
It's so good to see your face and to hear that you had a reinvigorating time in Hawaii and you must realise just how happy it makes folks like me feel to hear that there's some good news health-wise. I don't know you, girl, but I'm always sending positive thoughts your way.

Lori and Cary -
I too am so happy for you. Sending huge virtual hugs!!
Dear Lori and Cary,
I just read your latest blog and I sit with tears running down my face. This is the BEST news that I have heard in SO long!!!!
Lori, You look so good in the pic.
You have both amazed me (and I am sure you will continue to amaze me!). You are extraordinary people, who, I believe, are an example of strength, courage, joy, peace, etc. to SO many people.
Tony (my husband) and I, (and many others, I'm sure) will continue to pray for you both AND we will expect to hear more and more good news from you!
All my love and admiration,
Your cousin,
Kathy (Riggs) Owili
lori!!
When Cary called me the other day with the news I nearly soiled myself. I don't think anything in the world could make me smile that wide. Looking forward to seeing you both soon and love you so much
Oh my, I can't express how happy I am to hear this news, I check in every day for news of you. I KNOW you will be ok and that we will laugh and be happy when we meet up in SF in that amazing Cal sun. You go girl, I know you will beat this. Keep smiling, stay happy and be positive!
Lisa in Englandxxx
So exciting! Keep getting better Lori!
Lori - I can't tell you how excited I am to hear this news! It's strange - my family was just asking about how you were doing, and I felt horrible that we hadn't communicated in so long. Thankfully - I had an email from Carey waiting on me this morning!
Stay positive - I have absolute faith that you can beat this thing! Take care!

Doing the "Happy Dance" I am beyond thrilled for you sweetie ... luv ya lots!
Lori,
I just discovered your blog. You give me hope! I too have adenocarcinoma of unknown primary with numerous liver mets. I was diagnosed 10/3/05 and given 9-12 months. I responded to chemo and am basically symptomless. However last CT showed "significant progression of disease". Now on 5-FU/irinotecan. I've been told that I'm reaching the outer limits of survivability with this type of cancer Anyway at 46 and the mother of 3 young kids (7,9,11) you give me hope that I can be around a while longer. Would love to chat. My email is holly282400@yahoo.com.

YAY! I am so glad to hear it! Happy also that you were able to escape to the islands and relax. Having a bit of peace and being surrounded by nature really invigorates the soul and helps one to focus.
I have been lurking here for a couple years but keep checking up on ya and praying for you!
Lovely scarf! Is it batik?
By the way, thanks Cary for posting the diet! I will look into it and share the info with other NF2 and cancer people I know.
Peace to you both!
- Beck :o)
Hey I am just curious......
I was looking a little closer at the photo you posted from vacation and noticed the amazing waterfall! You went to Maui, right?
I also noticed that there was a guard/handrail and the trail looked fair from what I could see. I am like Yvonne (with NF2) and have a balance disorder but can go on moderate trails with hiking poles.
What is the name of the trail you went on in the photo? Is it an easier or more even terrain type of trail?
Thanks (sorry if this was off topic).
- Beck :o)
Awesome to read you. It's always good to get a respite. Have a blast.
It does my heart good to see you so happy in that picture! I am so happy for you both! I do believe in miracles.
I am just so delighted to read the latest on your blog!!!! Big hug!
Great news!
Keeo strong :-)

Its been a while since I last commented, but I just wanted to check in and tell you I'm thinking about you. I'll keep checking for a future post. In the meantime, enjoy life!!!!
Hello! I've been reading all of your posts, and I must say, you have only made me stronger. My mother was diagnosed a little over a year ago with Leiomyosarcoma, and has been struggling ever since. She is my best-friend and I have found it so hard to cope with and at many times its extremely hard for me to help her find strength to go on. Keep fighting, and keep posting! Watching how strong you have been has helped me help my mom...
Thank you!!!
You are so beautiful!!! This is my first time to your site and I'm reading about how brave, loving and simply just a beautiful soul you are.
Hi there!
My Mom was just recently diagnosed with lung cancer. My Dad has started her on the Budwig diet - I can't tell you how great it was for he and I to read that you also are on this diet and having success. My Mom has chosen to not pursue chemo/radiation so we are all relying on the good grace of nature. If you have any further info on the diet and your progress that would be fabulous!!
Many prayers and thoughts your way,
Donna
Bless You, Lori...I find myself reading your site after following Cary's link, and really glad I did. You said "walking miracle," which I believe one hundred percent. I am so glad for you! Not only is total remission possible, but it is visible to you now, so hold onto that.
I have seen other walking miracles with my daughter and my father, who both recovered from liver and kidney failures. We are all truly blessed by God.
Peace & Love from Mike@CybersMusic
Hi Lori,
I found your blog through Cary's, but then there was a huge gap. I'm so glad I checked back (after 8 months) to find you still happy, healthy, beautiful. I have Stage IV metastatic lung cancer (nonsmoker) and started out on a clinical trial, right at the get go, with Avastin (combined with Taxol/Taxotere, which I was allergic to, and finally Gemzar). After 4 cycles of combination chemo, I was on Avastin alone (the study was in combo w/Tarceva, but I wound up w/the placebo arm). After 5 months I had progression. Now I'm still in a study, post-progression, on Tarceva w/Alimta (a drug for people with lung cancer caused by asbestos). I got all the yukky stuff too, but the rash part passed and I can now drink coffee and eat spicy food again. (Genentech will pay for all the drugs for 2 years while I'm on the study.) The amazing thing is that after being on it for 6 weeks, not only did I feel awesome (Ok, I looked terrible, but felt great), but my primary lung tumor shrank 2.3 cm, which is more than all the previous chemo w/Avastin combined. I'm Asian, so I might have that gene mutation that Tarceva works on.
Anyway, I'm so happy that you've come through it all with flying colors, and thanks for the diet info, I'll definitely look into it (even though I'm not supposed to ingest "extra" stuff). You are an inspiration, and I want to fight this the way you have fought for 4 years, with courage, tenacity, humor, compassion, and travel!!
Cheers to the living!
Jasmin
I just found your blog through Cary's. This is wonderful news!! I'm thrilled to read this. I've also experimented with the Budwig Diet, but went astray a bit. I'm inspired to give it more effort now. Your vacation sounded sublime. Happy, happy news all the way around! Blessings galore, MW
Hi Cary,
Thank you so much for the info on the Budwig diet and for talking with me today. I am getting the books now!
